I have an ABIT IC7-G Mobo and the fan is grinding (humming.) If i just remove it will everything be okay? Or do i have to get some kind of replacement? I've seen mobos without coolers on the NB and was just wondering if it was really necessary.

You should be able to use a passive heatsink as long as you're not overclocking and there's enough ventilation.

You defenatly need a heatsink of some kind. Modern northbridges run very hot; you'll probably end up killing your board run with nothing on it.

Zalman makes great passive heatsinks, Zalman 1, Zalman 2.

 for that ZM-NB47J

alternately Abit will most likely send you a replacement fan.

fair chance you'll have to be taking the mobo out to install it, though you may have to anyway to replace your stock fan, depending on how it's attatched.

Could i just unplug the fan, and keep the heatsink on there as passive? Because the zalman cooler is incompatible with my mobo (i don't have the mounting holes)

well i wouldnt advise it, espeically not overclocking, but you might well get away with it temporarily while a new fan comes from abit. Might want to make a good backup...
