I recently started getting a machine check exception very frequently with a lot of memory issues. After opening my case it turns out my northbridge fan has stopped spinning. One of the spokes has broken off causing the fan to deform and stop spinning. I played around with it a bit and ended up ripping the fan off by accident. I was wondering what replacements could I get for it? I have a K8n Neo4 platinum motherboard and don't know what specifications the replacement should have. I am not really looking for performance or anything. I just need my computer working again. Can anyone provide me with some links to some good one that will work with my mobo??

Thanks a lot

You could just buy a small 40 or 50 mm x 10 mm fan and double side tape it on, provided the connectors match or you splice them. That would be the cheapest way, but make sure it clears any cards though.

Seeing as how your chipset cooler is one of the kind iwth the fan recessed into the heatsink, you're going to have to replace the whole unit, which unfortunately, means you're going to have to remove your motherboard to get the old one off. But once you get your mb out of the case, removing the old one is simple. The entire unit is held on with two spring-loaded push pins, so you just turn the mb over, locate the pins and squeeze the two small tabs that project out from the sides of the pin. Once you squeeze the tabs to the pin's center, the spring will pop the pin out. Then you'll just take the hs/fan unit off the chipset.

To replace it, as mentioned, there are a host of options out there. Woodbutcher linked a very nice one at Performance PCs....the EnzoTech copper hs. It takes a 40mm fan, and for a fan, I'd really recommend the Scythe Mini-Kaze. Very, very quiet, and a lot of air flow for its size.

For a complete, almost stock looking replacement, there are a LOT of those around that'd work......

SVC has a page of them: http://www.svc.com/chipset-cooler.html

Performance PCs has a bunch, too: http://www.performance-pcs.com...n_page=index&cPath=197 (You're looking for one that can use the two holes your old one mounts with....either push pin style or bolt-through.)

But I really like the one Woodbutcher linked: http://www.performance-pcs.com...=197&products_id=23200 It's not cheap but solid copper and gives you the ability to replace the fan if it ever dies again and won't leave you trying to find another hs/fan unit......just replace the fan.

And this is a link to the Scythe Mini Kaze Ultra....an outstanding 40mm fan..... http://www.performance-pcs.com...=123&products_id=22537

Don't have to buy an HSF - fans for recessed HSs are available and others can be modded to work.

what board is this?

Do you overclock?

How much would you consider spending on this cooler?

If you want a nice one, my first vote goes out to the HR-05 IFX.

Well ive been doing some research and it seems a lot of people with my motherboard the k8n Neo Plat 4 end up getting the ZM-NB47J and just cut off a couple of the pins so it doesn't block the gfx card. Since it is proven to work and its cheap I bought it for 5 bucks and will install it when it will get here. Heres a picture I found of someone who cut it to fit. http://www.littleblackdog.com/...playimage.php?pos=-744

I just have a couple of questions though. I'm having a hard time removing all of the old thermal gel from the old heat sink how clean does it have to be? Also the nforce 4 chip is very small do I have to only cover the metal part with thermal grease or should i cover the surrounding green areas with it as well?
