Northbridge Cooling

What are some of the better options for Northbridge cooling? My E6600 and DS3 should be here on Tuesday. I've heard the northbridge chipsets run a bit hot and it may be a good idea to cool it down? Any truth to this? I will be overclocking as high as possible.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

At 400FSB it burns my finger. With a scythe ninja you can't get any fan on the northbridge, however you could try the Thermalright HR-05, I heard it was pretty good. Just point a fan at the northbridge and you should be good.

I'm using a Big Typhoon for the CPU cooling. I'll look into the HR-05. Thanks for the suggestion.

Any others?

HR-05 is the best choice out there IMO. If you need more room due to a large cooler or SLI, try the HR-05 SLI which is the same thing with the same performance, just offset for large coolers or SLI. On top of that, temperatures can be dropped even more by zip-tieing, a thin 80mm fan, such as the Delta EFB 80x15mm fan. If you put a thermal sensor on the northbridge and register it to speedfan, you can have it very quiet when idle, but when gaming it will keep stability.

I currently have the Jing Ting copper version, more expensive but at the time the Thermalright SLI version wasn't available. Works great and includes the fan.

As thecoolnessrune suggested, there's also the HR-05, but you can get it cheaper at Jab-Tech, and the HR-05 SLI, cheaper at SVC. Not sure if either includes the fan.

Anyone got a pic of how that HR-05 looks when sitting on the chipset? I'm intrigued by it.

I won't be doing much gaming, but I will be doing a lot of video editing and graphics.

The HR-05 looks like a very nice cooler.

That delta looks like a loud fan though = 30db.

This Panflo looks to be much better at 23db

They also have this Panflo - 21db but it's 25mm instead of 15mm. So It may be too large?

I'd like to to be as silent as possible. I think I'm going to pick up a fan controller also.

go to Thermalright.com, then look for the installation guides, find and click on the HR-05

I've read other threads where people with a DS3 and scythe ninja have hot glued a 40mm on top of the NB, are you sure there isn't enough room, even for a 40*40*10mm fan?

Definately no room. The bottom fin of the Ninja barely clears the top of the DS3's northbridge heatsink. And the heatpipes are only a few millimeters away. I guess you could maybe fit a fan on the bottom blowing upwards, but thats about it. You would have to use something like the HR-05 SLI or another bent northbridge heatsink if you plan to actively cool it.

EDIT: Actually looking at it, it BARELY clears the northbridge. You can stick a fan on it, however it would most likely be touching the heatsink. Anyone got a good QUIET 40MM fan to suggest?

Precisely. 25mm fans tend to get in the way of expansion slots or big coolers. Thats why youre supposed to stick to thin fans. If hooked to, for instance, a Sunbeam Theta with a thermal diode on the chip, it should be pretty quiet most of the time, as the cooler does an excellent job cooling passively.

Well I ended up buying the Zalman ZM-NBF47. It was only 5.99, but I found 3 reviews showing it staying right with the HR-05, but passively!

Plus, at that price, I'm not out much if I decide I don't like it. I could just place it on the other chip on the motherboard :D

Where did you get it for $5.99?
