The guy in question may have as much validity as the Iraqi Information Minister, but for the moment, assume he's telling the truth, and North Korea would attack the U.S. with nuclear weapons in response to any embargo. How would you respond?

So you would go ahead and put the embargo into place?

I mean, that's an implicit threat, and presumably U.S. intelligence would know if he's telling the truth or not. Wouldn't the embargo be, in essense, signing the death warrant of major cities on the West Coast?

I dunno - maybe we should ask the UN?

:p

But seriously - NK is just blowing smoke trying to get a bigger aid package.

yes. Hell, let's end all these verbal threats once and for all by having all sides show their cards. If we place the embargo and the north koreans fire missiles towards the US, I have absolutely no problem nukingALL of North Korea. That should GUARANTEE the death of the entire regime (bar ambassadors).

NK is attempting to extort money and aid from the U.S. They are, and have been, saying that if we don't give them what they want they will nuke us.

As an individual, if someone was to do this to me, I would not tolerate it. I would deny their demands and prepare myself for the fight. I expect nothing less of my government.

If NK is capable of, and did, deliver even one nuke anywhere near the U.S. the gloves would be off and they would lose in about 2 hours.

You cannot back down from people like this.

If this guy is telling the truth it qualifies as miracle. We know how long they operated the weapons production program and it could not have created more than enough material for a couple of warheads. There's no logical place they could have gotten more. DPRK has never successfully tested a missile which would get farther than Japan. They had more failures than successful tests. The guy claimed they had gotten the missile technology from Pakistan. Pakistan can barely lob a missile into northern India, so how would those get to the West Coast?

Because N. Korea missile program is more advanced than Pakistan's missile, thanks to our friends and their scientists, China and Russian...
I think their missile might be able to reach Alaska, but probably not West coast, maybe at most Seattle and northern Canada (earth distance was closer up north than appear on the map due to round shape :) ) but they could certainly fired the missile to South Korea and Japan, which in term of damage done is almost like firing into one of our cities...imagine Japan and Korean economy in shambles and the Japanese govt begin to sell their US treasury notes, what it will do to US economy short and long-term...

Because China only wants to be treated as a world power, not act like one?

What allegations have been proven false?

Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree. Not sure about 100-300 but NK had nukes back in the early 80's (or at least US had intelligence that they did). US is acting like they didn't know until just recently but that is bull. I know someone who was over there.

Edit: btw, HappyPuppy has it right... you can't back down from people like that.

The United States is the only superpower in the world, and that's a fact. We have taken the lead in resolving crisis after crisis around the world (Korea and Kuwait come to mind), and no other country in the world can lay claim to such leadership.

China, on the other hand, won't even step up to restrain their petulant child-state of North Korea when it's absolutely necessary for them to do so. Maybe the difference is lost on you.
