The way the news is turning out, trump got snookered by North Korea to end a nuclear program that collapsed all by itself. Let's see how the negotiations turn out and if Donald comes home to parade down Main Street in Emperor's clothing.

I would love for someone to describe what success in these negotiations even looks like.

Raise your hand if you had no idea NK even had 3 US prisoners.

Or if you think it's weird Trump is heaping praise on NK for freeing prisoners they took in the first place.

It's like thanking a car thief who stole your ride and dropped it off in your driveway after driving it for 3 years.

raise your hand if you knew there were 5 more, still in NK, and wondering why the admin isn't mentioning that as further goals. I mean, they should, right?

Some of Pompeo's comments already seem to indicate tacit acceptance of a permanently nuclear NK but with changes to capability (missile range). Odds of us getting their arsenal are near zero I think. This from an administration that previously demanded unilateral disarmament before any negotiations so the hunger for a deal (any deal) on Trump's side has to be insane now, I mean he's already declared the summit a success.

Yes, my guess is the most likely outcome is some superficial promises by North Korea that does not disarm them, followed by Trump declaring it the biggest triumph for peace since world war 2.

Followed by Trump raging against the Nobel committee if they don't award him the next peace prize.

It's like we were all saying you can't trust NK, they are up to some shens, yet the temple Trumpos were too eager to listen and think, and too busy polishing the trophy case for their Nobel before we've even had the first meeting, let alone actual accomplishments.

NK isn't just going to have over nukes bc gameshow star Pres Trump made some absurd threats. We're dealing with a guy who casually murders his family and starves his ppl. WTF.

This was so predictable.

Don't forget that Trump hired warmonger Bolton as his National Security Adviser. That guy most definitely told Trump to have the war games as scheduled. Possibly as a sign of strength going into the talks. Or he might have been shrewd enough to offer the suggestion knowing full well that NK would revert back to its old self. Bolton only wants wars. He doesn't believe in diplomacy.

EDIT: NK's full response. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44136263
I hadn't even read anything except the threat to cancel the talks. Bolton is a known quantity in the world.

There's nothing wrong with talking to NK and Kim meeting with the SK leader was encouraging. What was stupid was to mistake being a loudmouth boor for ability achieve significant results. As every Vulcan knows, only Nixon could go to China and it took many years for the USSR to collapse. A few insulting tweets isn't mental toughness nor comprehension of an opponent.

We'll play this game as Kim dictates at this point. Trump can Bleet and Bolton bluster.

Prolly the wrong NK thread for this, but what was stupid was elevating the profile of this by Trump.

Well enough to have communication channels open, but they can stay at a low level.

But Trump had made this such a big issue, put so much political capital behind this (plus executed some stupid & counterproductive actions), and made so many promises it's actually drastically weakened our position, meanwhile elevating Kim on the world stage. Oh so honorable. Oh so smart. Oh so tough. Moron.

Pakistan has nukes. Russia has nukes. We're not shitting our pants over them, yet we are over NK. Then Trump starts chanting Nobel, cancels the deal with Iran after they gave part of their shit away, then invokes Libya & Iraq, the last two states to give away WMDs only to end up brutally executed.

Oh. Plus we're also busy pissing off our closest allies and isolating ourselves.

Hmm. How stupid can Trump be.

That's sort of an existential question really. Just how badly can the world be screwed by the display of a further lack of intelligence, ethics, and knowledge before we reach some sort of apocalyptic dystopia on a large or small scale?

Look who's slowly figuring out he doesn't know what he's doing and is finally starting to asses the risks even if through a personally political lens (he'll be seen as a failure).

President Trump, increasingly concerned that his summit meeting in Singapore next month with North Korea’s leader could turn into a political embarrassment, has begun pressing his aides and allies about whether he should take the risk of proceeding with a historic meeting that he had leapt into accepting, according to administration and foreign officials.

Mr. Trump was both surprised and angered by a statement issued on Wednesday by the North’s chief nuclear negotiator, who declared that the country would never trade away its nuclear weapons capability in exchange for economic aid, administration officials said. The statement, while a highly familiar tactic by the North, represented a jarring shift in tone after weeks of conciliatory gestures.

On Thursday and Friday, Mr. Trump peppered aides with questions about the wisdom of proceeding, and on Saturday night he called President Moon Jae-in of South Korea to ask why the North’s public statement seemed to contradict the private assurances that Mr. Moon had conveyed after he met Kim Jong-un, the 35-year-old dictator of the North, at the Demilitarized Zone in late April.

The South Koreans totally bamboozled this simpleton into the summit because they are more worried about him instead of the North Koreans.

But wait I thought Trump’s toughness had forced North Korea to the bargaining table.

Lol.

Guess Trump is realizing he can’t just speak something into being like back home where the faithful will twist reality to fit anything he says.

Who knew presidenting could be so hard?

lol, the South Koreans see a scapegoat.

They're going to blame Bolton, while he did fuck up, for NK making new demands or signaling that they aren't really going to denuke (which SK knows but they sold President Nobel Prize on to get him to the summit).

But in South Korea, many say the blame for the sudden problems in the diplomatic process lie squarely at the feet of someone else: John Bolton.

“There are several land mines on the way to the summit between North Korea and the U.S.,” said Chung Dong-Young, who served as Unification Minister during the last progressive administration and is now a lawmaker. “One of those land mines just exploded: John Bolton,” Chung told YTN Radio.

Woo Sang-ho, a lawmaker in Moon’s ruling Democratic Party, agreed. “Bolton’s preposterous ‘Libya solution’ is a red light in North Korea’s summit talks with the U.S. and South Korea,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Moon is in the driver's seat here and he's taking Trump for a ride.

Oh I still think Trump is in the driver's seat...only this car is on rails, with a detached steering column; the track can be found in Disney Land, and something about a "Mr Toad."
