North Korea says it has begun fuelling its rocket ahead of a planned - widely criticised - launch.

Paek Chang-ho, head of the satellite control centre of the Korean Committee of Space Technology, said fuel was being injected "as we speak".

Critics fear that the launch, expected between 12-16 April, is a test of long-range missile technology.

It comes as the Worker's Party promoted new leader Kim Jong-un to "first secretary" at a rare meeting.

The party also named his late father, Kim Jong-il, as its "general secretary for eternity", state media said. Kim Jong-il died in December 2011.

Worst mistake ever was firing MacArthur. tens of Millions of souls died and tortured for 60 years when they could have been like S Korea. Total war or no war its the only way.

They would have been like China if MacArthur wasn't fired.

I empathize for the common North Korean, but the country is only about 24 million people. Giving them occasional pay days so they don't do something unbelievably stupid seems like a far saner alternative than what a proper military campaign would cost.

MacArthur was insubordinate and incompetent after Inchon. He split his forces, left them over exposed, denied large amounts of evidence of immediate Chinese involvement, and then panicked when his forces sustained massive losses due to his mistakes and called for a massive escalation against the world's most populous country right in their backyard over a dubious strategic objective.

What exactly has North Korea done since 1953 that would have warranted the loss of (at an absolute minimum) tens of thousands of additional American lives and billions of dollars worth of equipment?

Aside from his extremely poor military judgment during the invasion of North Korea, he directly threatened civilian supremacy over the military, something far more important to America than the outcome of the Korean War.

Eskimospy beat me to it, but it was MacArthur's fault that the Chinese achieved as much success as they did in the first place. MacArthur's firing was a good thing because Matthew Ridgeway proved to be a far better commander (albeit much less of a self-promoter) than MacArthur ever was.

Problem is that money props up their military program so the ante is always being raised. The more money we give them, the bigger threat they build so we'll give them even more money next time.

EDIT: And I agree with Eskimospy and Ichy about McArthur. Dude had one really good campaign and a LOT of self promotion.

News now reporting US officials think the rocket failed in flight after a successful launch. Waiting on confirmation.

Not a big surprise it failed. Good job NK, way to prioritize your vast resources.

I wouldnt be suprised in the least if NK claimed the U.S. or SK shot it down in an attempt to save embarrassment from their massive failure.

So a much-anticipated display of power just displays impotence instead. Embarrassing.

What better way to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the 20th century's worst dictators than by demonstrating your own backwardness and incompetence.

I do feel bad for the engineers who worked on that thing though...
