North Bridge Heat

I have a GA-965p-DS3 and the north bridge gets too hot to touch even under normal operation. I have it over-clocked to 420Mhz (C2D E6420 @ 8x420) and I'm wondering if I should get an after-market HSF for my north bridge.

Ive had 2 of the same board and both exhibit the same behaviour.

Even though they dont seem to have any stability issues, ive upgraded the cooling on the northbridges to copper active coolers with AS5.

Temps went down substantially, that stock cooler just sucks.

I use a Thermalright SI-120 with a 120MM fan. It's large enough to provide air movement over the NB HS on my Gigabyte P35 MB.

if your nb is getting to hot to touch i would recommend getting some cooling for it, it does not neccessarily mean you need another aftermarket hsf, even a fan blowing at it will make alot of difference. I have the 965p-ds3p and my nb was getting way too hot, couldn't touch it for a second and i couldn't get an aftermarket hsf coz of my tr ultra xtreme my solution was the spot cooler :

now the nb runs warm and system alot more stable at 490x8

I have a simpler solution, first take off the HSF, reseat it with AS5, then strap a 60mm around it and let it blows cool air over it. That's it, it's cheap and very effective. My S3 is even worse as some of you knows but after this little mod, it's a lot cooler.

Anyone try replacing the NB heatsink, with an Evercool VC-RE cooler?

If your NB HS is getting too hot to touch, that means the HS and compound are doing their jobs. They may not be cooling the NB chip down as much as you like, but they're doing what they are designed to do.

If your NB HS was simply warm to the touch, yet your system wasn't stable, then you could blame the compound, for not transferring the heat the way it should.

Thanks for the input. I picked up a 50mm fan from a local shop and strapped it to the HS. Now I can hold my finger on the HS and it's barely warm to the touch.
