The North bridge generally contains the main chipset logic (processor and bus interface), the memory controller and AGP Controller (along with integrated video if present). Real Time Clock may also be present.

The South bridge generally controls the peripherals: PCI bus, ISA if present, IDE, USB, integrated LAN if present, AC97 and Super IO (PS/2 keyboard, mouse).
