Over the last little while I've been contemplating buying a bunch of Nortel stock. I believe that sooner or later, it's going to go up. (I'm not insane to believe this am I?)

How low do you think it will go? It is at $ .49 today.

50 cents sounds good to me. Unless the company goes bankcrupt, it will eventually go higher (although it might go a bit lower first...)

why not follow it over the next month or two? The economy's not really picking up...their stock isnt likely to go up.

they're not gonna make it.

Or will get their assets acquired at pennies on the dollar by a hostile bidder. Either way, the shareholders are hosed.

Nortel is the Bell telephone of Canada. They are a utility first, manufacturer/solution provider second. It seems to me they would be far from being a take over candidiate, and utilities usually get help form the government when paying down debt gets to burdonsome.

I use to work for them. I worked for Northern Telecom. I always thought them to be rock solid survivors. I am shocked their stock is so low. In fact, I wonder if they are under investigation like Enron? Qwest is in trouble and under a criminal investigation, and they are a utility. Maybe utilities don't get thatpreferential protection after all.

I guess I wouldn't be so surprised after all.:Q

Put it to you this way......... there are 3 major competitors in that market:

Cisco
Lucent
Nortel

Cisco has very low debt & is looking the best out of the three

Lucent & Nortel have large debts and one of those two is going to be either bought out or one of them is going to go bankrupt.

Either way the sector is going to shrink itself with this economy.

Alcatel is more of a true competitor for NT and LU than Cisco, although CSCO does overlap somewhat. There's also tons of smaller fries like ADC Telecommunications that are competitive in pocketed subsectors of the major sector (telecommunications capital equipment).

Long story short, telecom will need to undergo some major consolidation before you see a recovery. Odds are exceptionally high that NT won't be one of the survivors.

Good question.
I have a little bit invested. Bought in at .95
I'll hold until it hits 1.00, and if it doesn't, guess i'll hold it and sale for the tax write off. (I'd rather pay taxes on the earnings than write off the loss)
Most of my investment $$$ are tied up with another Canadian company, TIWI.
I'm waiting for it to get over .40 and i'm taking my profits. :D
Hopefully things will pick up a little mid-oct. (one can always hope), if not...well, i'd rather look on the bright. :)

Who knows, look like it a scam stock or maybe all of them are. I wouldn't even dip anything into it If i were you. just be happy with the amount you have now. If not just gamble it all away, you be much happier when you have nothing. There is someone already there waiting for a free meal who got in at low price, as soon you buy they will wait and wait sometime fews hours to few day depending how high the prices is then they will sell for big profit and it will collapse or goes so low that you will just keep hanging until everyone else is out and realizing hmm you just a milking cow. That's the name of the game and I hate it. All stock work the same way. some like big name intel, amd has nothing really to do with the company. it all marketing to drain your wallet dry. There is no factual information so far just speculation and silly number.
Anyone who is against me saying this besically feel I am a threat to them and they are broker or a few lucky individual who's making pretty good income trading stock daily. They don't hold overnight. This is why the average joe loses in the long run. The buy and hold is what most of us do hoping it will turn around, as you can see it only happen if their are more sucker buying into the stock and that why it goes back up.
