Normally wouldn't ask here but why not. Should I take a job that'll make me even dumber?

Got an offer to be a sole helpdesk tech for a major artist firm with only 8 or so employees. No servers, just Macs, DSL and a bunch of artists needing fulltime 'tech' help whatever that means.

I know I'll be frustrated half the time since it's braindead activity but the people are cool (not to mention they're ALL cute artsy chicks) and pay ain't bad considering that it requires no certs or anything, just some tech and network experience. 9-5 thing.

Also I probably won't be utilizing even 10% of my technical ability and most of the time I'll probably be just sitting around looking at ass and drinking coffee. I don't have any certs but I have dabbled in on a wide gamut of stuff long enough to have me supporting businesses up to 100 or so users successfully.

My longterm goals are a bit fuzzy at the moment since I have shown interest in way too many areas and not sure exactly where to specialize in so this might be a good chance to see if I can fit in with a team rather than working by myself and also some people networking which can possibly lead to another job that's more challenging.

What do you think?

How is the pay compared to other jobs that make you less "dumber"?

Good Q. I think it's right up there as far as 'Helpdesk' goes but requiring less credentials in terms of certs. Every other similar position in other companies requires some of the basics like MSCE A+ etc. Landed this one because I have lots of Mac experience.

Maybe you could take the job, then while you're sitting around and being bored you could study for your certifications or work on your skills to better pursue another job in the future

take the job, just remember that being an artist isn't the most stable occupation.

Well it's a major name that's been around forever and won't be going anywhere for a long time which is another reason for my consideration.

I might just take it for a year and see how it goes and then if I don't dig it, I'll look again..but it will be one LONG year....

That's part of the plan. With the residual income, I should have enough to take night or weekend certification courses.

Well, if the pay is good, you could take the job and use this as an opportunity to further your education and get certifications.

I dunno. My current gf is pretty dang smokin so my standards are pretty high. I'd say most people would find them 7/10. Half are asian, half are white so best of both worlds I guess. They are the slightly nerdy types though given them being artists.

Well I won't be taking ass as that'd be considered cheating..well unless the ass is better, I can always switch I guess.

Take the job, in the future that "director of the IT network support" title will look good when you apply for other stuff.

That's pretty funny but might actually work.

if the company grows, and they have to hire more people for IT support, guess who's going to be the manager? 😀
