Normal/Typical 8800 GTS temps?

Long story short, the OEM fan for my EVGA 8800 GTS was fine at idle but got quite loud when I loaded a game.

I installed an aftermarket heatsink and after a few configuration changes and options, I've settled on a 92mm fan blowing into the HS and across the VRAM. This is a fairly quiet configuration but my idle and load temps are somewhat high relative to other configurations (though not as quiet).

It idles around 68c and at load in the mid 80s.

Compared to some of the other configurations, this is nearly 20c over what I had previously. However, this configuration also blows across the vram which other "cooler" configurations didn't do.

So, is this a relative safe temp for idle and load? If I can get a cooler GPU temp, is it worth not actively cooling the other chips on the video card board?

Mines is idling at 57C with fans also at 100%. OCed @ 645/951. STOCK cooling.

Ugh...

I'm not looking for a cock fight. I'd just like to know if those temps are safe. I'm not going to overclock and I'm looking for a quiet PC above one that I can OC.

mine was idling at 68-71 as well before I put in an HR-03 Plus.

shaved 12C off that.

Although I realized now that a lot of that was being caused by poor intake on my case.

Thanks guys. I was kind of paranoid because I had a GeForce 6800 before and I remember it would get pretty flaky if it overheated which happened with the stock HSF. I ended up getting an aftermarket HSF that fixed it though.

Those temps are actually with the HR-03 Plus with a 92mm fan at a really slow speed, like ~1000rpm. I had added a resistor to the fan to reduce noise but temps are pretty high. I pulled the resistor and the sound difference isn't noticable but I got a ~10c drop in temps so it actually hits the mid 70s at load now.

I'm still debating whether to change the configuration again and add a 120mm fan which I know would drop the temps another 10-15c but if current temps are within the safe zone, I might leave well enough alone.

At stock speeds, mid-80s load temps should be fine. If you're OC'd with load temps in the mid-80s you might have reason for concern. OC'd at 621/1000 I get some random restarts or artifacting if temps go higher than 80C. Right now my idle temps are in the 50s, with load temps hitting the 70s using the stock cooler.

Just curious what kind of case/case cooling you have going? Personally I think you would've been better off looking to get a side case fan blowing air into your PCI-E slots. It sounds like your temps actually got hotter with your new HSF although its quieter than the default fan. Still, I think you could've achieved quiet + cool by simply improving case cooling and using the default cooler at stock fan speeds.
