I came across a laptop today (Dell Inspiron 1100, 3 years old). The client complained of random BSOD's, spontaneous shut-off's, and very slow performance. Speeds were indeed beyond slow, the fans were blowing on high, and the unit was hot to the touch. Ran some temp diagnsotics and the CPU was registering at 74C.

This is scorchingly hot, right? Can I get some conformation on this? Thanks.

Wow - way too HOT.

I can see why one would get the BSOD.

I would blowout all the fans and HSF with air.

Are we talking a Socket 478 celeron? I have the a 2.0 gHz Celeron Chip, and it runs VERY cool as s478 chips go. I use it to test mobos. I can run it with an aluminum passive heatsink with no clamps, or thermal paste for minutes without crashes. I haven't tried to just leave it running, because eventually the heat WILL build up enough, but that temp sounds too high. I'd check for proper contact with the laptop heatsink, a dead fan, clogged HS fins, and teh like. Sometimes flexing, dropping, or otherwise mis treating a lappy can cause the heatsink to not make contact with the CPU/other chips properly. Very rare, but I've seen it happen.
