Normal temperatures for an X1900XTX

I was playing CoD2 yesterday when I started getting some really bad artifacts on the mission thats included with the demo. At first I had no idea what was causing it but vaguely remembered someone else posting here about something similar and that he thought it was temperature. So I opened the catalyst control center and... HOLY CRAP!! 80C!! And no... my video card is not overclocked. It only took about 1 minute for the temp to drop back to 65C after I exited the game. Double checked all the fans and they're all running.
Is 80C normal for this thing or is my card cooking itself?

Yeah, it's fine. I get around 82C on load in most games and some people were getting up to 90C a while ago. The cards handle those temperatures fine.

My 1900xtx generally ran 80-90C under load. I never had a problem, but did not like the high temperatures. Recently, I have been using ATI Tools to control the fan speed--and concurrently discovered that under the default settings, the 1900xtx fan runs at very low speed even at 90C. I now keep the fan at 100% for games (I don't notice the sound while playing, though some might) and this drops the temperatures substantially--I've never seen anything above the low 60sC under load.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a try. However I've searched ATI's site and can't find that anywhere. You got a link for it?

ATI Tool is a third-party utility, not something from ATI themselves. I also used to use it to run my X1900XT's fan at full speed and never saw temps above 70-75C in games (they would easily rise to 90C with the default fan speed ramps, which are really slow).

I don't have a link since I haven't used it in months, but it should be fairly easy to find.

I also use ATI Tool to increase the fan speed for games. I keep it at 80% in those, although mainly because I prefer the constant pitch fan noise to the steadily increasing pitch you normally get.

for a slightly more advanced way of messing with the fans, Use rabit 2.0a and ATIWinflash108 to edit your bios. My cards go to 100% fan speed as soon as they hit 55*C also put in some accelero x2s with a fat 120mm fan blowing right into them. cards do 60*C @ load.... pretty nice since they're @ 675/1600
