Normal for Western Digital 80 to make a whining sound?

I just recently bought a western digital 80 gig and it is making this really annoying high pitched whining sound like eeeeeeeeeeeeee also when I boot or shutdown my computer you can totally hear it revving up like eeeeEEEE or EEEEeeeee, what does this mean, is it normal operation or is there something more sinister? Thanks.
 
how does it go again? 😉 if it is 7200 rpm it is probably ok, I dunno if my 7200 rpm maxtor makes that much noise because the 10k rpm scsi drive drowns out everything else 😛
 
Thanks for replys, looks like it was messed up, took it back to Office Max and did an exchange, now the new one that I am using does not make that annoying sound 🙂
