So...where does what you state above (bolded for clarity) disagree with what I said? Your CPU is warmer than your case. How exactly do you get a warmer case than CPU?

While not likely, the proposed 'impossibility' of having a higher case temp than an air-cooled cpu temp is entirely possible. It depends on where the case temp is reported from on the motherboard, the air-cooling method (e.g. duct), and the ventilation of the case.
2 simple scenarios where this is possible:
1.The case thermometer is far enough away from a ducted cpu to feel the benefits of the duct and is surrounded by previously warmed air.
2.The case thermometer is located in a section of the case where airflow is highly restricted, due to cabling, fan placement, etc. and the cpu is well ventilated.
But obviously, the odds are that if you case temp is well above your cpu temp, they were reversed in the reporting process.

XMS 3200 512x2 running DDR392
Thermalright SLk900-U with a Thermaltake Smartfan 2 running full speed (75CFM)
4 Sunon 50cfm fans (2 intake and 2 exhaust)
Enermax 430Watt PSU with 2 fans


idle temps are 33c for the mobo and 28c for the CPU

This is reported by BIOS and Asus Probe!

IS this odd? Is this good temps? I'll report load after some Ut2k3/Q3/Sandra and see what goes up and to what.

Is the fan on the SLK900-U is blowing down onto the HS and the mobo (as should be the case with this HS)? If so, I don't see any law of thermodynamics that would preclude the "case" temp being higher than the CPU temp, because the former may well not be the ambient in the case.

All I had to do is look at you computer specs. I have a P4P800 as well and my system temps are also higher than the CPU's. No one really knows why that is and most speculate that the temp sensor is placed in a wrong spot or something...

after folding for a few hours and running prime95 in the background the highest temps were 40c for case and 40c for cpu

the best way to determine the culprit is to open your case side cover and see what happens. the case temperature has GOT to go lower than the CPU that way

If not, you probably just have a case of bad/switched probe sensors.


What are your temperatures??

well, maybe it is the NB, but it doesn't say that's what it is...maybe that is what it's reading. if so than I suppose I'm fine

occasionally for around 1-2seconds, my cpu temp is lower than my case temp on Asus prob because maybe the temp probe is so close to my VGA card and my HSF is right next to the exhaust fans on the back of my case. Everything in my case is using rounded cables and i have 5 case fans circulating the air in it. U'd be surprised how low a temp ur CPU can get when its idle and you applied the Thermal Paste properly and sparingly.
