I want to move to northern California, well even southern Oregon as long as it doesn't rain a whole lot. I want to be within an 1-2 hours of the ocean, and north of Sacramento, but more west, obviously. any nice places up there? with decent house prices?

Redding isn't a bad idea...there isn't much up that way to pick from if you want to be north of Sacramento. Eureka maybe. Also it's not quite so close to the ocean but I hear Chico is actually a pretty nice town. And if you're younger it's like a party zoo.

i guess i am looking for somewhere that i can get a decent amount of land ~1 acre, and not pay up the butt for, and be close enough to enjoy the ocean when i want to, and to get the maritime climate. and where i can have a nice yard grow

If you don't mind living in the relative boondocks, I'm sure there are plenty of places that will fit the bill. Chico's not too bad, but it's definitely full of drunk college kids (parts of it anyway), and isn't really that close to the ocean.

Ukiah, where I live....is rather expensive for what it is. Not a bad place to live at all though. Hotter than shit to us in summer (105ish today)

Further north here in Mendocino County are more towns....Willits being the only one of real decent size. I'm not too sure about things up by Eureka/Crescent City.

If you want maritime, Redding, Sacramento, Chico, etc. are all out. Hot hot hot in the summer. Not close to the ocean.

Whenever I'm heading North along the coast, it's to camp or vacation and I just pass through, so I don't know much about it. My impression is that you have to go pretty dang far north to get decent housing prices. No idea what you'd do for work. Eureka/Aracata is the only city type place that comes to my mind when I think North of Sacramento and on the coast (I've also never heard anyone say north of Sacremento when talking about coastal stuff - Sacramento is the central valley). Also, the beaches aren't exactly the same as sunny SoCal beaches. I've never gone swimming north of Stinson, and seem to recall lots of "danger, rough surf" type signs.

Ah. That explains it.

Redding is nice in many ways. As you say, it's pretty close to Shasta. There's some nice mountain biking near there, with a good race series (http://www.teambigfoot.net/), and plenty of outdoor activities.

By no stretch of the imagination would I call it maritime or close to the ocean though, and it gets too hot in the summer for me. But then, I am weak and would perish if I lived in a place where it got over 80 degrees more than a handful of times in a year. :p

Actually why not central coast? A guy at work was just down there for a wedding last weekend. He said in Cayucos prefab houses go for $120K.

Medford is a crack town(seriously, down here we refer to it as "methford") if you're looking at the Valley area why not consider Eugene or some other biggish city/town.

Redding and its surrounding area is your best bet.

I was up there last week for a conference and it wasn't half bad.

You are 120 miles to the coast and still only a 2.5hr drive to Sacramento or a 3hr drive to San Francisco. Lots of lakes including Lake Shasta. Awesome skiing up there as well.

Tahoe skiing is only about 4.5hrs as well.

Reno is a short 3.5hrs or so.

Climate wise, Redding is firggin hot in the Summer but pretty mild in the winter as they rarely get snow. Houses prices are tumbling there as well. I spotted some custom built 2500+ sq ft homes on 1acre plus with a back yard pool for $400K, asking. While that may seem high to others, us in the Bay area would have to pay $1.8M or more for the same setup.

Lots of cattle farmers up there as well since the largest beef stockyard auction west of Colorado is in Redding. Lassen Volcanic park is cool and 45 miles, gold country to the west is all along Hwy 299.

We went out nightl and compreat to Bay area prices ,beer is much cheaper, eating out is also cheaper. Gas prices were similar to what we have in the bay area as well.

I would definitely retire there!

After reading all the replies I'll provide even some more help:

I went to college in Eugene, grew up in Sacramento.

Avoid Southern Oregon, god what a shithole. Medford, Grants Pass,. Yuck! 1.5hr drive the coast from Grants Pass which puts Medford at just around 2hrs to the coast. If you think Redding is hot try Medord.

Redding area has better skiing and better lakes. I think the coastal area around Eureka is nicer than Crescent City.

Eugene, while nice is expensive for what a shithole that place is. Damn yuppie hippy liberals flock to that place. Only city with more lawyers per capita than SF is Eugene. Plus the town is inundated by rowdy college students and there fans. Too god damn much rain too.

No chance your getting a 1acre lot in the Sacramento area for cheap.

The Ukiah area is expensive because if you wrok in Santa Rosa you most likely can;t afford to live there so people live up in Ukianh and commute down, Santa Rosa is another SF suburb. Too many wineries along the 101 keeps the prices sky-high until you start heading into no-mans land.

Crescent city aint bad if you like the rain, fog and coast. Living inland is nicer and provides a lot more sun. Still lots of rain. Crescent City is so full of white welfare trash its not funny. Horrible area to raise kids. Since Pelican Bay state Penn is up there lots of welfare trash move there to be with there inmate husbands. Anywhere you go you will see scumbag parents with there pregant teenage daughters flossin there welfare checks.

Beautiful area for hiking though which make its a nice 200 mile drive from Redding.
