Sorry, the girlyfriend has narrowed it down to these two and wants me to now decide for her.

I know whatever answer I choose will, by default, be wrong in the long run... so I want somewhere to point and shift blame when she chases me with a frying pan.

Well she's making a mistake. Other than that the nook has more features. The kindle is outdated and slow. We had one and as soon as my wife spent some time with a friends e-reader we quickly returned the kindle.

There's a few sites that list the differences between the nook and kindle and it really comes down to what you want it for. One is not inherently better than the other but they are both inherently inferior to the sony e-reader.

I love my Kindle, but I've never used the Nook. The Kindle 2 at $189 or whatever it is is a good deal, compared to what they used to be. I spent that on my original Kindle a year ago off Ebay. Amazon has a large selection, and it's growing. I've picked up some great books for free that I never would have read otherwise.

That is the last time I will ever buy a Kindle. That thing is the biggest POS. So you press down on the 5 way controller and guess what? Nothing happens for 5 seconds as you wait for the screen to update. Want to type something out on the overly intrusive keypad? Well that takes forever as well.

The wireless bookstore is nice I guess.

It was funny watching him play with it. The first thing he tried to do was click something on the screen like his iPhone. Nope.

I knew I should have gotten him an iPad. Oh well, live and learn.

Just went through the same thing. Ended up with a Nook.
The GF is quite happy with it. It is a tiny bit slower than the Kindle, but for a non power user it will be fine.

I was in the same dilemma couple months ago. My SO wanted an e-reader and I recommend the Sony ereader but she declined. We ended getting Kindle and she loves it.

Was it a broken refurbed Kindle 1 with a dead battery?

It takes maybe a second for the menu to appear on my Kindle 2, and navigating through lists of menu items is slower than a PC screen but not painful at all.

You can easily hold a kindle in one hand for hours while you read a book, and the battery lasts a couple of weeks with the 3G off.

Wife has a Kindle she loves. Wish I could get commission, she's sold 4 more after showing them to friends, ect.
