I'm hoping someone out there who has upgraded to the new one or has a lot of hands on experience can help me decide between the two. My father dropped by with his new Kindle Fire today and I got to play with it and don't like the feel of the frame itself, so the KF is out of the running. Between the two Nooks, is the newer one worth the extra cash? I got a quick hands on at Best Buy and the newer one did feel snappier w/ it's upgraded internals. But with Target having it 50 less + 30 gift card, it's awfully enticing to get the older model.

I do intend to root/hack which ever one I do get, and with what I read it sounded like the new Nook Tablet may have issues since the bootloader is locked. With them rooted/unlocked I should be able to use the Amazon app store which is the one that I prefer.

They run nearly the same software, from what I understand. Same body styling, but the Nook Tab is a slightly different color and a little lighter.

I'm going for the Nook Tab soon, but I really don't think the Nook Color is priced well. It honestly should be priced quite a bit cheaper than it is.

AFAIK, the Nook Tab has a signed bootloader, so community efforts with custom roms for it will be . . . minimal. Don't expect to be running CM or any other AOSP builds on it any time soon.

Honestly, I find the Fire, and nook offerings too limited with no cameras or BlueTooth, throw in locked bootloaders (nook tab) and a bowser that collects massive amounts of data (Fire), the nook color is too slow to enjoy browsing as a modded tablet, and you'll always be updating the OS after it's modded...

Guess I'm just spoiled by my iPad 2...

You know that you can use a different browser on the fire right?

Certainly, but the same can't be said for cameras, GPS, BT...

Well it's trade-off some are willing to make. Most Wifi only tablets including the iPad do not have GPS. Camera, ok if you're into webcam. BT, not too many use this on a tablet. I think it's a good trade to save 50-70% over iPad or GTab.
