noobish ram question

hi hi all. I feel like an idiot asking this, but I've just searched Newegg for like 15 minutes, and I couldn't find a single stick of 1GB pc3500 ram. I currently have two 256 OCZ el dualed in my comp, and I'd like to keep them while adding another gig. I asked a friend if this would work and he just said that I should make sure I get the same speed ram, though my two current sticks would no longer be channeled. Is this info correct? Anything else I need to know?

Thanks a bunch for reading and dealing with my stupidness

unless you're planning on maxing out your motherboard, though, why buy a gig chip? it will totally suck when it goes bad, and (IMO, at least) the slim performance bump isn't worth it.

ahh cool cool, I didn't check any companies other than ocz, corsair, kingston and mushkin. guess I'll have to go with a brand I'm unfamiliar with. At least the reviews are favorable 🙂

and yeah, it's funny...when looking for what forum to put this in, I totally didn't see the very first forum...oh well, been a long day (long day = female friend issues)

thanks for the help and the "help"

so it wouldn't be better to get a gig stick now, that I can pair with another gig stick in the future?

yeah I was thinking about selling my current ram too, but I've never really done any parts selling before. I wasn't sure it would be easy, or where I should/could go to do it, if it'd be worth it....

as far as $$$, I think I can rationalize putting some money into this, though spending 500 for 2 gig's right away would be a bit much. I'd be ok with spending $200-$250
