Noobie Wireless question

I have a SMC 22mb/sec wireless router with associated pcmia card for the lapster. If I stay close to my computer area...a room or two I am OK, but I want to extend my range to downstairs and the other side of the house. I think I need wireless access points however...how the heck do you utilize them? Just plug em into a wall and they are then a repeater? Repeaters would be nice...I just need some basic help...thanks
