noob with a switch lol

Ok I have a buffalo router with tomato installed. Everything is working fine on my little home network.
Well I got one of the TRENDnet TEG-S8 gig for my newer machines to speed up thruput.
Now before I screw all this up and come crying for help.
couple of questions.

dsl modem....router.....switch.....computers
is this correct?

if I am playing a lan game that requires me to open tcp ports and udp ports if both the computers are on the lan behind the switch they don't require any ports to be forewarded is this correct?
