So, I just got a cheap Core2Duo machine I want to throw linux on to learn. Id like to enable full disk encryption, and have seen a couple of distros can do this on installation (Mint and Ubuntu). I originally wanted to try out elementaryOS (it looks beautiful!) but it doesn't set up encryption on installation.

Can you provide other suggestions for noob-friendly distros that can do this?

Thank you!

I believe all the *buntus prompt to encrypt the home folder or the full disk on install.

That's cause it's a part of the Debian installer. All Debian based distros should support it out of the box during install.

Yep, they do.

What are you going to use the computer for? Reason I ask is many programs won't play nicely out of the box with an encrypted setup. You can usually work around these issues but it will involve recompiling the programs in question.

Really? That's not been my experience, and if I understand LVM encryption correctly, the encryption should be transparent once the volume is unlocked.

Anything available via apt-get should work. What I have found is that some other programs had issues. I don't remember the exact details because it has been awhile but I think Plex and similar programs had some problems.
