Congratulations on deciding to join our glorious pc gaming master race  All your troubles are over.

You may want to wait a month or two until the problems with the new intel sandy bridge motherboards are fixed and until AMD's new bulldozer cpu is released. However if you must build now then this would do:

CPU - Athlon II x4 £80 - good basic quad core
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=803

Graphics card - GTX 560ti £198 - most important part for gaming, this is an excellent value very strong gaming card, will run pretty much anything out there
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...14&subcat=1341

RAM - 4GB DDR3 £35 - all you will need for now
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1517

PSU - Corsair 650w £71 - probably a bit overkill but its a good quality PSU, never skimp on the PSU
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...id=123&subcat=

Motherboard - GA-870A-UD3 £82 - dont need anything more than a basic mobo
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...03&subcat=1782

Case - Antec 300 £53 - very good case, easy to work with, strong steel not plasticky at all
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=7&subcat=160

Total = £484

There ya go, should run most things and theres extra money for you to pick a monitor/keyboard/mouse of your choice if you need those things. Plus thats all from overclockers.co.uk you can sometimes find the same things cheaper on ebuyer.com or dabs, overclockers only really makes sense if they have a special deal and you have the free delivery for being a loyal forumer. Also dont forget a DVD drive, any will do theyre all good enough.

To be honest you are probably better off waiting and seeing how it benchmarks on various laptops.

You'll want to know if a quad gives a benefit over a dual... but most likely you will want to go for the best dedicated graphics you can find -

You might get away with an GeForce GT 420M (XPS 15/17), but you won't be running it on high. At the minute laptops with an AMD HD5650 falls in your price range, which should be stronger than the 420M. Again I doubt that the will fly with graphics set to high...

Sandy Bridge laptops should be out with a GeForce GT 540M shortly (Looks like March due to the chipset problems). Check out Acers, HP, (possible new wave of Dells), and specialist suppliers (Kobalt/PCspecialist) etc.

*cough* Laptop *cough*

Though to be honest, your suggestions to the OP will produce a better system for less money. Laptop gaming is EXPENSIVE for what you get and you have to sacrifice battery life/portability.

(sorry I was off writing my post and checking the minimum specs, so this wasn't there when I hit post...)

Minimum Specs (Required for playing Total War: Shogun 2):

2 GHz Intel Dual Core processor / 2.6 GHz Intel Single Core processor , or AMD equivalent (with SSE2)
1GB RAM (XP), 2GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
256 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card (shader model 3)
1024×768 minimum screen resolution
20GB free hard disk space

Recommended Specs (Recommended for optimum game play of Total War: Shogun 2):

2nd Generation Intel® Core™i5 processor (or greater), or AMD equivalent
2GB RAM (XP), 4GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
AMD Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series graphics cards or equivalent DirectX 11 compatible graphics card
1280×1024 minimum screen resolution
20GB free hard disk space

lol oh right laptop oops. Ehh you 100% set on a gaming laptop OP? As PlasmaBomb said theyre expensive, i used to have one which i ditched for a desktop + netbook combo and have never looked back.

Plus laptops have lower specs, a 5870 in a laptop is about half as powerful as a 5870 in a desktop and you basically have zero upgrade path with laptop graphics. Theres a standard called MXM for upgradeable laptop graphics but when i had a gaming laptop i looked into it extensively and its basically one big dead end for most laptops.

Stay away from laptops for gaming, unless you have an outrageous amount of money to drop on one - and even then I do not recommend a laptop for gaming.

The list that Maximilian posted looks very good, if I were going to build a machine today, that is a good guideline to go by.

The only thing I would change on Maximilians list, I would probably go with a GTX460 instead of the 560.

I agree if it doesn't need to be portable get a desktop or if you're looking for something cool get a Small Form Factor PC it will be more powerful than a laptop. I've have various laptops from work and they all have pretty basic stuff break on them after 12-20 month's in. 2 power supplies, 1 screen, 2 modems, 1 keyboard. I really hate laptops.
