Noob to DVD burning

Got an NEC 3520A, i have some noobie burning questions as this is my first dvd burner.

I'm using Sonic mydvd for burning. Burning 1gb of mpeg or avi video seems to take about 3 hours, most of that time being for the video transcoding. Is there a different way I can go about this that doesn't take as long? Also the burns seem to have some loss of quality, kind of pixelated. How can I burn at maximum quality?

Is sonic mydvd a decent burning program or does there exist better?

I am using the same burner with Nero 6 and no problems here. What kind of media are you using? I have no experience with Sonic, but I would recommend Nero.

Arent mpeg and avi both compressed formats? therefore there would always be pixellating?

I would also suggest not using mydvd, it sucks.

So what do I convert .mpeg and .avi to before burning ?

Also I'm not seeing anything about DVD burning in Nero, do I need some special version?

Depends on the quality of the file. Is it a 700MB .avi DivX/xVid ? Then it will never be as good as a Replica DVD-R.

As far as burning, Nero is the ONLY way to go IMO. If you have a 700 MB .AVI and want to burn it to a DVD you need to first take out the AUDIO using VirtualDub. Then, Convert .avi to .mpeg using TMPGenc Free. Instead of using the sound on the .avi, you need to use the .wav you created with Virtual Dub.

Now you have a huge mpeg file. Get TMPGenc DVD Author and convert the .mpeg to VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. You can also add chapters, etc.
