Hi,

I've never built a pc before, so I'm hoping the friendly and knowledgable people on the forum can help me out.

My requirements:
Would like Core Duo 2 CPU, preferably E6400 or faster.
Don't play games, but want option to drive a 30'' inch screen like an Apple Cinema.
Don't need watercooling (figure that too ambitious for an absolute noobie) or LEDs.
Don't have any parts so everything needs to be bought.

My skillz:
Not many :) I've installed RAM and HD before. I can just about take apart a PC case :)

I've done some reading and currently my parts list looks like this (prices inc VAT, from scan.co.uk):

Power Supply - £98.64
600w Seasonic S12-600 SLi Ready Silent PSU 2xPCI-E 4xSATA 120mm Fan ATX1.3/2.01

Motherboard - £145.69
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi S775 i975X, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA I / II, SATA RAID, ATX

Case
Antec P180 Advanced Tower Case, Black (no PSU) £93.87

CPU - Undecided atm, don't think I want to pay premium for X6800.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 S775, 2.40Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, Conroe Core, 4M Cache Retail LN15049 £231.42
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 S775, 2.67Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB, Conroe Core, 4M Cache Retail LN15050 £411.19

CPU Cooler
Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower Cooler (Socket 478, LGA775, 754, 939 and 940) £33.48

RAM
2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £194.63

GFX
256MB XFX 7900GT Extreme, PCI-E (x16), Mem 1500 MHz, GPU 520 MHz, 24 Pipes, Dual DVI-I/HDTV VIVO £215.01

HD
4 x 250 Gb Samsung Spinpoint P SP2504C, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 9.0 ms, NCQ £48.05

Floppy
Mitsumi FA404M 1.44 Black FDD+Int USB2 7 in 1 Card Reader (SM/MMC/SD/CF/MD/MS) Fits in 3.5" FDD Bay £14.09

Optical
Pioneer DVR-111DBK Black 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD Writer (Reduced Length) OEM £23.18

Sound Card
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound Card OEM £56.58

Total = £1588.82.

1) Is there any parts I should consider instead of the ones listed above? Better parts for similar cost? I'm not too sure about the gfx card as the 7900GT seemed to be the cheapest decent card I can find with Dual DVI.
2) Am I likely to get all of that stuff inside a Antec P-180 case and still have it running relatively quiet and cool?
3) I've heard people talking about OCZ ram being very good. Is there much difference between that and the Corsair RAM I've listed?
4) Does anyone know of any compatability issues or potential problems I might run into with the listed parts?
5) Is there anything else I need to buy or will all the necessary cables come bundled with the parts I've purchased? Any additional cables, screws?
6) Are there any good reputable sites to buy parts from in the UK at good prices? Only ones I know of are scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk.

Apologies for the long post / questions. Any help / recommendations are much appreciated!

you're bri'ish? Save yourself some cash and overclock a E6400.

Also I personally hate creative, the built in will probably be fine.

is there much difference in performance between the 2M vs 4M cache?

you can oc to 2.93 stable from the bios with stock cooling, or so anand says. There is always some risk, but reports indicate it is pretty safe and easy on conroe.

It is easy enough to overclock the E6400 to E6600 speeds, but I would say get the E6600 due to the added cache size and then potential for further ovreclocking.

thanks for the advice. i was going to go with the onboard, but the from what i've heard, that creative card really makes a big difference with the audio.
