Every time I browse the "Motherboard" or "CPU/Processor" forums, like 80% of the threads are like "What's Teh BeSt Mobo" or "Who Makes the BeST mObos" or "What should I buy next" or "Help Me decide what CPU to get". This is ridiculous. I mean, I was under the impression that this was a legitimate hardware forum that was about sharing knowledge, and not a place for a bunch of giddy computer "enthusiasts" to ask what they can blow their daddy's money on next.

I think we should just have one or two stickies where we tell these kids where to throw their cash and leave it at that. And a link to the Anandtech reviews, cause I doubt they're reading em.

Older reviews are a little hard to get to. Maybe links sorted by manufacturer or chipset type for video cards and processors. Then if you click on video cards, 6600GT it gives you all the articles with a 6600GT in it. Cause I doubt they know how to use the search either.

Have you written the stickies yet? If not, you may have the answer as to why they're not there.

It is annoying to the older, more experienced users because we know it is the umpteenth repost of the same question. But they are new, they do not know AT that well, and they have to start somewhere. It is just part of the noise that will happen no matter what.

One of the reasons you see a lot of pre and post-purchase "did I get the right thing" threads is a social psychological bit called cognative dissonance. If there are choices, we have this dying need to reduce the stress involved with making the right choice by asking others to prove we made the right decision. A perfect example of a market that makes money at this is the auto magazines. They sell more magazines to folks that just bought a car than are planning to buy a car. That is partly why their reviews hardly ever say anything bad. The suspension could snap in half and they would say 'they had a minor issue' (CU is not an auto mag). Part of their business is making people feel like they made the right choice.

JPeyton's thread is stickied and that is probably the best we can do. I sometimes will review the threads and if I see that the new user is trying, I will post. Usually it is, "wish I had it" kind of posts. Helps reduce stress. :D

Not that this fixes anything...

I just wanted to say that... everyone is a 'n00b' at one point.. try not to be so high & mighty! :) i find especially in this aspect (computers etc), the time it takes to go from n00b to non-n00b is short, and shrinking. welcome to 2004, you can't stop the influx of n00bosity so you might as well embrace it.

Its fair to be tolerant of newbs to a point, but constant 1337 language coupled with pathetic thread titles equals a degrading forum.

i shouldn't even be talking because i just joined this forum this month.
but, there has to be some sort of feeling-out process for the newer guys like myself. for me it mainly consists of reading a lot of the posts, and adding one once in a while. if you didn't give people a chance to get acquainted with how things work by putting up useless posts and getting biyatched at, then i guess the alternative would be some sort of recruitment process. i'm glad it is the way it is though, or i wouldn't have received help with about 20 different things already. maybe i have an advantage because of my age (i'm 29) as far as getting used to do's and don'ts. i did get a chance to read the latest Gamer's Buying Guide, and it is most excellent. eliminated a couple questions, to be sure.

I disagree. Noob is more used to talk down to people who dont know what they are talking about, constantly flame, get worked up about simple things, whine etc...

There are plenty of new people who come in hear for the purpose of the forums. They come in to gain and to give knowledge. The noobs are the people who come in to start trouble.

Ahahaha, am I startin trouble?? Geez this is "forum issues" not front page. I mean damn, it took you guys like over a week to see this. Look, I'm not trying to be high and mighty here, and I was a "noob" myself not too long ago. But I knew how to read and use the forum search button. I did what research I could on my own, and then if I still had a question I would post. Here we have a large amount of people joining up with the sole purpose of getting a purchase verification, with no intent of joining the community. And it's flooding the forums. And yes, who am I to talk, I don't have "lifer" status yet. But c'mon, do I not have a valid point? It's not like I'm askin for these people to be shot, I just think someone's gotta draw a line and lock a few threads. Thats all.

It's all a matter of perspective, I'd say those posts are still more Anandtech relevant than 99.98% of the drivel that comprises OT or P&N.

Begin rant.......
You are so wrong and misguided. Anandtech is not some elite forum that discourages noobs; it exists for them. And what the heck does this mean?
The noobs are the people who come in to start trouble.
All of us came here as noobs to begin with; no matter what our knowledge level. It doesn't matter what knowledge level we were at at that time; we were still "noobs". Did we all come to make trouble? NO! The overwhelming majority come here to ask some fairly simple questions, hoping to get some assistance. That is how I came here and I'm sure others have done so also. Since that time I have tried to pass on the knowledge I have gotten from others. I'm sure that some of those I helped have done so also. That is what makes Anandtech what it is. If you have a problem with folks asking something that you consider a "dumb" tech question or making a statement you don't agree with, you should perhaps stick to the Highly Technical forum. I'm not trying to create a battle with you here either. I just think you have the wrong idea of what a site like this does. Please refrain from stereotyping all "noobs" as troublemakers. There may be a few but they are usually dealt with by the mods. /rant

REPOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God you noob, hit the search bar and see that there are several posts of people bitching about the newbies cluttering up the forum.
REPOST
REPOST
REPOST

These are the ones I hate seeing myself when searching the forum is the repost police screaming repost.
But I had to say it since this is a repost. Do you realize how many "newbies are dumb" or its a repost newbie use the search" threads thier are? We all started somewhere and it really doesnt bother me one bit. Im sure they will gow up to do tis same thing bitching about the newbies. And I love how we show some of them love for starting out here as well telling them to f off its a repost, or your an idiot, of just plain out being rude. Cant we all just get along? We were all newbies at one point or another and just because you were bitched at when you asked a question doe not mean that was the norm.
Now as I place my flame suit on I will say thanks for reading and that is my 2 sents.

Oh my bad, I did not realize that this thread is a repost. Guess I should have, cause it's obvious that those other threads were able to get rid of the clutter.

I also didn't realize that throwin around the term "noob" was 10 times worse than the other
"N-word." The response that I was initially looking for was one regarding the clutter in the forums, not a bunch of platinum members and lifers charging in to defend the Honor of the Noob.

I just don't think there is really a need to have 2 new threads a day about what to buy next.

We never said we disagree with you. However most of us have been around long enough to know that it isn't going away and there is nothing we can do to stop it. These "noobs" are doing nothing "wrong". They are simply being a hindrace and a nusance.

Take me for example i have been a member of the forums since 2000 (I was about 9 and had a different screen name and i left for like 2-3 years. Dont even remember what it was) have i done my fair share of stupid stuff yes. Did i ask questions like this, was i a hindrace No. I came into help and be helped. Some people come in to just cause trouble. We just have to live with it, i mean cmon some of the people here have been dealing with it for much much longer than you have and longer than myself. You just have to live with it.

Yeah man, I see what you mean. I guess it's not really a big deal to just live with it. I don't know if you're aware of him, but "Mancow Muller" (Chicago shock jock) is an even bigger example to the price we pay for free speech. He's a jackass, but to can him would not be democratic.

Even still, I wouldn't be unhappy to see the mods throw their weight around every once in a while ;)
