i just built my 2nd computer and i wanted to share my dsl and have them connected together so i can share files and drives so i picked up a linksys router. i have it all set up andi can see both computers from both computers in my network places and i can connect to my new computer from my old one.but when i try to connect to my old computer from my new computer it says

\\compter_name not accesible
logon failure: the user has not been granted the requsted logon type at this computer

Operating systems?
It sounds like a win2k/xp computer complaining about a logon. The 2k/xp machine denying the connection needs a user and username added for the other computer.

both computer win 2k
old one soon to be redhat but i want to figure this out first before i wipe the whole thing and none of it matters anyway

As was mentioned above, go into the Administrative tools on the old machine then get to users. Add the login name and password you use on the new computer as a user on the old one.

ok i poked around a little bit found adminisrtative tools/local security policy/local policies/user rights assingment/access this computer from the network and added my other system since nothing was there, restarted and still got jack.

ok i looked around in administartive tools for a while for anything that looked like it was related to permissions. also searched around on google and a couple other sites. this is probably a realy stupid thing but keep in mind i've never done this before. can anybody walk me thru this?

Start
Settings
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Local Users and Groups
Users

Right Click (on the right side)
New User
User name: <user name used to log onto other computer>
Full name: doesn't matter
Description: doesn't matter
Password: <password that is used to log onto other computer>
Confirm password: <same as above>

Uncheck
Uncheck
Check
Uncheck

See if that helps.

ya i did that. i had both computers with the same log-on name so i didn't know if that would cause a problem so i i made the new computer under a different log-on went thru the steps again and still nothing. as far as the uncheck, uncheck, check, uncheck part i don't see anything aut checking. is that a winxp or 98 thing? i'm useing 2K

anybody got any more suggestions? it seems like it should be working to me. and it's weird that it'll work one way but not the other.
