noob questions

just getting my new xp up and running, decided to join the TeAm.

a) different WUs take different times to complete, right?-how much can they differ on the same platform?

b) do different WU "stress" different parts of my cpu/mb? ie: my cpu temp has varied ~3C on different WUs(ambient temp is same) and chipset temp has varied ~1/2C.

I am wondering because I am new to SETI and I have a new set up. so I don't really have a history to compare with.

Hey, Marrkks, welcome to the TeAm! 🙂

The answer to your first question is YES. My T-Bird 1.4@1.6 takes anywhere from 4 hours to 5.5 hours to crunch a work unit. Take a look.

The main aspect of a work unit that affects the amount of time it takes to crunch a work unit is its Angle Ratio (AR). Low AR's (< 0.100) take a lot longer to crunch than high AR's (> 1.000).

To answer your second question, SETI will put most of its stress on the CPU, so that's where you're likely to see the most temperature increase.

thanks for the reply Logix.
anywhere from 4 hours to 5.5 hours to crunch a work unit. thats what I was wondering, how much they(WU) varied. 'cause I got a WU that I crunched in <3hrs and then the next one took ~4.5hrs. I just wanted to make sure this was "normal". I only have a handfull of WUs to compare.(10 so far)

is there any way to pre-determine an easy WU? I ask because I am getting ready to get a couple of K6's crunchin'. they need a lite work load if possible. or just give 'em somthing to chew on and let them go.

On your XP you will see little difference between the WUs. On my 1800+ they vary from 2:45 to 3:30. Another factor is the operating system you use. Win2000 and XP handle what are called VLAR (Very low angle range) WUs much better than 9x or ME.

If you use one of the TeAm proxies, they can set it up to route the VLARs to a machine whose OS is better suited for VLARS. I am not sure if they can route them based on processor times. If you would like you can set up your own SETIQ, there are plenty of people who would give you a hand if you are interested.

Glad to have you on the TeAm 😀

thanks for the info, that was exactly what I was wondering about.

glad to be on the TeAm🙂

I'm off to find info on SetiQ.
