Noob Question: WTF is SLI?

Where to begin? Its a technology that nVidia has created to allow two graphics cards to work in tandum. This means that you can theoretically have up to twice the performance of a single solution, although real world you will see anywhere from a 30-80 percent increase depending upon the game and the settings used in that game. This will only work right now with nVidia's own nForce4 SLI motherboards which have two PCI Express graphics card slots that allow for such a configuration. When you install the two cards you also install a little bridge connector that links the two together so that the drivers an internal logic can coordinate the load balancing.

Really this is a trully enthusiast approach to gaming as it can become quite expensive. Some suggest to buy one card now then upgrade to a second down the road. This seems like a viable option but one that I am sure will not be utilized as much as buying two up front.

There are quite a few good articles on the net about it including one from this very site: AT SLI that can tell you more about all the technical intricacies of SLI.

Originally developed by 3dfx to run two voodoo's together. SLI stood for scan line interleaving

3dfx was bought by nvidia, now used to run two gefore 6x00's together. SLI now stands for scalable link interface
