I just put together my first system, with the following hardware:
Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester (939)
MSI Neo4 Platinum mobo
Thermaltake Tsunami Case w/400w psu
WD 800JB 7200rpm 8MB cache HD
Chaintech 6600GT 128MB PCI-E x16
Zalman 7000B AlCu HSF
The thing has six total fans (not counting the PSU): front and rear 120mm, side panel 92mm, the Zalman CPU fan (I think 90ish mm), motherboard chipset fan, and the vid card fan.
My question is about hooking up the fans. The mobo has connectors for two system fans, the CPU fan, and the chipset fan. The CPU and chipset fans have to connect to the mobo, since there are no 4-pin connectors, and I guess the vid card fan has to be powered through the mobo too via the PCI-E slot.
However, the front and rear 120mm fans have 4-pin connectors AND smaller connectors for the "SFAN" connections on the motherboard. My question is, should I connect these smaller pins to the mobo AND connect the 4-pins to the PSU at the same time? I know the fans work with just the 4-pins connected to the PSU, so does it hurt to connect them to the mobo too? Will they draw power primarily from the 4-pins or the mobo?
