noob question on Toshiba D-R400 DVD+-RW

The D-R400 DVD-RW is a upconverter of up to 1080p. I have no idea what that means, but I know it's not the same as a "true" HD-DVD player.

Can I play HD DVD's bought from the store?


If yes, can I get the player to play on my PC LCD? S-video? HDMI to DVI wire? I have a 8800GTS. Though I imagine I also need software for the playback or can the D-R400 connect right into the LCD using a HDMI to DVI wire?

I'll end up ordering another one then.
