I had good success with my first post and a few of you helped steer me in the right direction regarding components for my new build. I am not new to computers but this will be my first complete build. (For my son). Anyway I was wondering if there is a good resource for basic information on overclocking. I have read many posts and I see lots of numbers and acronyms but don't have a clue as to what they mean. I was hoping to find a pinned thread in this forum but don't see one.

For the record, my system will comprise the following:

Mobo: Abit NF7-S
CPU: XP Mobile 2500+
RAM: Corsair (2) x 512 DDR400
Gfx: ATI 9800PRO 128 x 256bit

I read many posts recommending the mobile XP's for o'cing, now I need to learn how to do it.

Thanks very much for any and all responses.

Try this for starters. you could also search this forum for the keyword "guide" as many folks looking for guidance are really looking for "overclocking guidance".

well thats it if you need anymore info let me know help will be really preciated

First... it's not a 2.6 anything. The only reason I'm pointing that out is because some people STILL get the idea that an XP2600 is a 2.6 GHz processor... it's not.

Second... check out my Athlon XP overclocking guide that I wrote up. It is not meant to be a step-by-step for a complete newbie. I wrote it to get people headed in the right direction because many don't know where to start or what to do if they don't seem to be able to reach their desired overclock. The guide is basically just the procedure I go through when overclocking a new CPU... if it helps you, great, but I take no responsibility if you screw anything up while following it. :)

The first link below has many good links within it. So rather than posting them individually, just browse through these please.
Link to lots of links

Of particular help to you and ur efforts to OC ur mobile barton is this advice from a member here named avalon. I cut and pasted this from one his earlier posts. I folowed his advice to good effect in OCing my mobile barton.

"Start off with 166 x 11 (stock 2500+ barton desktop setting) with 1.45v
Run that for a bit, then try doing 200 x 11 w/1.55v
if it works fine on the first go and is stable, try raising the multiplier by .5
you'll probably need about 1.6v for 200 x 11.5
200 x 12 you'll probably need about 1.65v
try reaching these numbers...if you need more voltage for stability, bump it up a notch, and from here on, try increasing your FSB very slowly and see how high you can get
I wouldn't recommend going past 1.75v (you'll probably get to about 2.5ghz)"

Good Luck,
EDIT: Feel free to PM me with any ?s, our rigs are almost identical
