Noob Question on Cables and Connectors

Will a DVI-D cable work with a DVI-I connector? I was under the impression this was possible, so I tried it, but I get no signal. (ATI Radeon 9600 and NEC Multisync LCD2090wuxi). Do I need to adjust something with the video card?

I can always use the VGA cable but thought I'd try the DVI-D one first.
 
Did you pick the correct input on the monitor? I know on my old Dell, I had to hit the input button to switch it from VGA to DVI.
