Noob question of the day

Does power supply have to be plugged into the motherboard to work? I just got a new power supply and plugged it in the wall and can't turn it on. I am assuming I have to plug it into motherboard first. Let the verbal abuse begin!

well, as a fellow tree-avatar guy, let me tell you i wouldn't know because i've never tried using one without a motherboard. Merry Christmas though. 🙂

yes, there is an atx connector somewhere on the mobo. look at the weird white connector from the psu and you will see taht there is only one fit. also, the connector should be the largest one there is.

Don't get me wrong. My new motherboard is on order. I received the power supply first and just plugged it in to here the fans, look at led lights, etc.

(begin verbal abuse)

Here a fan, there a fan, everywhere a fan fan 😛

(end verbal abuse)

As was said ATX power supplies are turned on by the motherboard. (By turned on I do not mean excited)

We only kid out of love

You could short a 3.3V (green I believe) wire and a ground wire (black) with a paper clip to start it up if you really want to start it up.

The answer is no. You have to short the 20-pin connector in order for the PSU to turn on (you have to connect pin number __ to pin number __ but I don't know which). Once again, not recommended unless you know what you're doing, and definately not recommended if you just want to hear the fans and see the lights.

1. Get a paper-clip
2. One end goes into the Green Wire (for the 20pin ATX connector)
3. One end goes into the Black Wire (for the 20pin ATX connector)
4. Plug into wall
5. Flip teh switch
6. Success
