Noob question, how to add wireless functionality in this scenario?

I'm moving into a new place soon and the network there is currently wired using a basic router. The router will be locked up in a cabinet and the owner is just gonna hang out some CAT5 for me.

Normally I'd just replace the entire router with a wireless one, but I'm not sure what to do in this case. Can I just plug the loose CAT5 cable into the WAN port of a wireless router and be good to go, or do I need a special device/firmware?

Thanks, one more question. Without access to the original router, can I still set up a 2nd router as an access point? Or should I just buy a device that's configured out of the box to act as an AP? Right now Newegg has a cheap D-Link router for $20 shipped, although that's gotten terrible reviews just about everywhere. The cheapest AP they carry is $30 + shipping...

I plan on having my main tower hardwired to the existing network, but I also have a laptop which will likely be the only device using WiFi, so I don't need anything amazing or full featured, just something to provide basic net access for the portable. I know they sell USB keys that can act as access points, but I don't plan on leaving my tower running 24/7 so those aren't really an option.

Yes, because you configure your router/AP, not the main one.

I don't recommend skimping pennies for such devices, because with some luck, you'll have the same device for along time, and some of the cheap ones are cheap for good reasons.

The Asus WL-520gU is currently $35 AR. It's recommended.
