I'd like to sell my Motorola RAZR and I want to know if it's unlocked or not. I bought it through Cingular with a 2yr plan. If it is locked, how do I unlock it?

Thanks

Put sim from another provider in it (e.g. T-Mobile).

To unlock it, try getting the subsidy code from Cingular.

Is that a free service. I know consumers now have the right to have their phone unlocked, but I dont know if it was free or not.

If the contract is not up, they won't unlock it will they? IIRC, the Razr is less than 2 years old.

Do customers even have the right to get the phone unlocked? That article was vague.. to me it seemed that it's just legal now to unlock your phone (it wasn't before?), but I never read anything about Cingular being required to do it.

The safest way is to get the unlock code from your provider, but I've read that it's tougher to get the CSR to give it to you these days. An alternative is to use one of those remote unlocking websites for $25 or so.

Since you posted this thread and labeled it "Noob", doing it yourself is probably not for you, but it's an option. You can run an unlocker application on your computer while it's connected to your phone. It seems like the application may be finicky about the installed firmware. This route is free, but it takes time to set up and is potentially risky - improperly done preparations or unlocking could "brick" your phone.

I tried to find the Motorola software for unlocking earlier this year.. had no luck.

You can get it unlocked from Cingular for free. According to a new law they have to give you the code.

You have to flash the firmware, then use a unlocking software. I just did it for a friend's phone. Do a search in Google and you'll find the site.

Unfortunately you still need the usb cable too.. which is like $30.

From what I understand Cingular is being difficult about it, and still wont give you the code easily.

Tell them you are going out of the country and that you need to unlock the phone so you can use an international sim.

So has anyone actually had any luck unlocking their phones through their service carrier (customer service)?....specifically Cingular.
