Noob question: DDR2 SO-DIMM memory install

I've just purchased an Inspiron 6000, after my T40 broke. I'm aware that this Dell uses DDR2 memory instead of normal DDR SO-DIMMs.

My question is: I purchased the system with only 256MB RAM, knowing that I can get memory cheaper elsewhere. (www.dealram.com, among MANY other sites) Since DDR2 is DUAL-CHANNEL, do I have to have both slots occupied, and with identical chips?

If that is so, then...is my Dell going to ship w/ 2 sticks of 128MB RAM, to make it 256? (and to upgrade i have to buy 2 identical sticks?)

If it's not so, and the Dell is shipping with a 256MB stick, with a 2nd slot open for me to put something in there, can I safely buy a 512MB stick and put it there to have 768?

I have never owned a machine w/ dual channel memory, and my quick Google searches leave me hanging. I can't find the answer to my question. Hopefully you guys can help. TIA!!

I'm guessing you're getting 1 stick of 256 with the dell. your extra 512 that you buy might work but it will be significantly slower than if you had a matched pair.
