Noob question concerning motherboards

I am new to upgrading my computer but I have an older system but want to increase my graphic cards potential (128mb Geforce 6800). Currently the motherboard on my computer only has a AGP 4x slot. My question is will upgrading my motherboard to a AGP 4x/8x slot effectively double my graphics card output? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forums! HighCalibreHooch is correct. Upgrading to a new motherboard with an AGP 4x/8x slot will not help you much, if at all. Instead you will need to bite-the-bullet and upgrade to a PCIe motherboard with a new graphics card. Throw in the possibility of having to get a new CPU & memory and you can see that it gets expensive really fast.

Thanks for the info guys not what I was hoping to hear but it saves me some money. I guess I need to save up for a system replacement.
