noob question , can I install Linux from USB?

This might be a really dumb question, but I'm sure somebody here can answer it in a heartbeat. Can I install a Linux distro from a USB key? Or do you absolutely need to install it from a CD?

If you can install it from a USB, then what are your recommended methods?

hmmm. I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 64bit from their website, confirmed as such in the download file name, and when I boot from the CD it says Ubuntu 9.10..

Wow, I just owned myself. I had a copy of 9.10 in the same folder from months ago that I never used, and burned that one without realizing it.
