I just started messing around with the manual controls on my canon g9 and I am finding some of it's limitations. It does ok at anything below 400 ISO, but above that I am noticing the shots look grainy.

What's the best non SLR (there is no way in hell I am gonna lug around those big things) I can buy with manual controls that can shoot at high ISO?

The Canon G11 or Panasonic LX3 (or their replacements, the G12 and LX5) will have the best for a non-SLR.

But they will still suck compared to something like an Olympus E-PL1, Panasonic G10, or Sony NEX-3.

thanks, I'll take a look at that olympus. It looks fairly compact compared to the panasonic G10 and the Sony Nex3

The NEX-3 is the smallest of the three.

The NEX body is the smallest. But because it has a bigger sensor than the Panasonic or Olymbus, the lenses will be bigger. So you'd still end up hauling around a tiny camera with a DSLR-sized lens attached.

Thanks everybody on the boards for helping me pick a camera. I went with the panasonic gf1. It was either that or the nex-3. I guess it was the easier manual controls and the pancake lens that did it for me. Not to mention it went down to $650. These are a few pics of my little man. Hopefully I'll learn more and get more creative.
