Noob question about WDTV

So I've seen lots of talk about people buying/wanting to buy a Western Digital WD TV Live. I'm a complete noob to the land of HTPC's, so forgive me for asking, but what does this add to an HTPC? Can't you just hook up your PC to your TV and receiver and play whatever kinda crazy file types you want that way? What does the WD TV change?

Thanks for any and all info and fake flaming, real flaming makes my eyes water 🙁

The WDTV allows you to play your media without needing an HTPC. If you already can conveniently connect your PC to your TV, then you don't need one.
