Noob question about cert test

I have a co worker that wants to take his A+, just to have the software adn hardware. I got mine though a cert class while I was in college, so they just pointed us to the right place. He knows everything, just need to take the test... I did a search and everything is talking about the prep classes. Does he just ask them to take the test and that is it, or is there some sort of registry...
