Noob question about applying Thermal Grease

Okay, I'm in uncharted waters here, and I've read up about this process, but I still have one question.

When combining the Heatsink and Processor, will the Processor be seated on the mobo, or do you combine the two first then place it in the mobo?

Dumb question I know, and I think the answer is "already seated." I just don't want to make this harder than it already is.

Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Also, how do I remove the previous pad on the heatsink? I apologize if this was covered, I tried a couple searches with no results.

first place the processor in the socket, and lock it with the bar. apply a little thermal grease on the bottom of the heatsink, spread it around, then whipe it off so there's a thin film on it. Then you put some on the die of the processor, and spread it around. Then place the heatsink on top

Quick and simple answer to a dumb question. Thanks alot, I'm just nervous I'm gonna fry this thing. Plus it's not my computer, so...

Make sure you only get the thermal compound on the CPU Die, if it is metallic in nature, bridging connections would be bad news. Also make sure the lever on the socket is up before trying to insert the cpu, inserting the cpu never requires force in a ZIF (zero insertion force) socket, so if you are having to push down on it, you are doing something wrong. *Note the arm moves out then up to get it out of the socket, also the heatsink attaches to the tabs on the socket, so that is the only way to put it on.

Thanks guys, got it on there just fine.

Now I'm facing off with the ECS K7S5A mobo that I had trouble with when I first installed it. The video card has to be seated juuuust right before it will post. At least, that is what I believe. It gets power now fine, fan turns, but nothing is happening, no beeps.

I should hear one beep and then it starts up, but nothing right now. I'll keep reseating the vid card.
