Noob Overclocker need help

Hi All,

It's my first time at trying an overclock so I need serious help. My CPU is a 6850 and MB is GA-P35C-DSR3. I'd like to know what are the settings that should be changed in the BIOS as well as the one that should be left alone. What parameters are to be adjusted ? For now the only 2 parameters that have been changed are the RAM voltage so it can meet the manufacturer's requirements as well as the fan speed controller which is set to manual. I know I am asking a lot and it can be bothersome for experienced OCer to answer such questions but well....We all got to start somewhere. In any case, if there is a guide of sort for that MB I would gladly read it

set your memory multiplier to 2x so it runs at an effective 800 and set your FSB to 400 and you'll have your cpu at 3.6GHz. you may need to set the cpu voltage higher or add .1v to your chipset but I think that it will work if you keep the voltages at auto. I wouldn't put my voltage over 1.45v personally. once you have your oc stable lower the voltage in steps and test it for stability with prime 95 while monitoring your temps with core temp. get the lowest stable voltage so your cpu will run cooler.

I got a problem with my E6600 and GA-P35-DS3R(F5 Bios): CPU-Z only shows 6x multi.
I even cleared the C-MOS. I tried turned on and off overclock.
In bios it shows 9x multi. I could turn up and down FBS.

Just wondering which component is defected CPU or Motherboard?

ok I have tried some setting here to OC my rig, I took exemple of this dude which has a similar setup, he used a Q6600 instead of my 6850 and the MB is a bit different.

When I leave the Bios and reboot, it's goes fine and I can see that duing booting it reads 9 x 400 3.6 Mhz but when using CPU-Z it says I am running at 6 x 400. What's happening here. Is it because I am using Vista and CPU-Z is not fully compatible. I am running the F2 version of the Bios, the one that came with the MB. I haven't flash it to the earilest version.

I think what you are seeing is Intel's SpeedStep kicking to lower the multiplier (hence clock speed) when the chip is idle to save power. Trying disabling SpeedStep in your BIOS and checking your multiplier again in CPU-Z.

OK, I just took a fast peek in my BIOS but haven't seen the option of flicking On/Off the Speedstep. Under what tab should I be looking to find that setting ? InfoTiger, if you find it tell where please.
