Still running a system I built in '04. Will going to PCIe increase performance? My AGP got me through Half-Life and Day of Defeat...I will also need a new MB. Thanks

You'd likely need a new CPU, MB, RAM, and Vidcard at a minimum. Possibly a new PSU too.

Going to PCIe won't increase your performance per se, though it will allow you access to the higher performing PCIe video cards. With the recent Intel and AMD price cuts, getting a nice CPU, some dirt cheap DDR2 and a decent MB shouldn't be much trouble at all.

Thanks for your time Bateluer. Thats what I was thinking as far as price drops.

If you didn't mind hanging on to your AGP rig for a little while longer you could go for an AGP X1950Pro or 7950GT, both of those cards would boost your gaming performance considerably and would be well suited to your A64 rig.

However going to a PCI-E rig is a much better option if you can afford it as it will allow you to use newer components like dual core CPU's and higher performing video cards..

Keep your current system. It's still good enough for 1 more videocard upgrade. Get 1 more gig of ram, overclock the cpu to 2.4ghz or so and get 7900GS or X1950Pro. It should last you another year. Despite what people say, there are only a handful of games that support multithreading, and none of them other than supreme commander get any noticeable benefit from multithreading today unless you want to brag that you are getting 180fps at 800x600 vs. 140 on a single threaded cpu.

...and then upgrade to PENRIL, until it wait until in August Dx10 AGP cards will arrive and
drope all existing Dx9 AGP cards at least %30 down.

I don't think so.

It's highly unlikely there will ever be a DX10 AGP card. You need Vista for DX10, and any motherboard with an AGP slot should not be running Vista. If they were going to make them they could have done it for the last year, there is just no market and it's not going to happen.

+1
Yeah, buy a x1950PRO, cause DX10 is not yet so need wanted. You can run DX10 games in DX9 mode, so it's better choice to buy an AGP card ;)

why not?

I have all of my rigs (that are 3ghz+) running vista and all of them but two are AGP setup's and they run vista just as well as my C2D/8800, P-D/2900XT setup's.

and as for DX10 AGP wel your wrong again, Gecube have an AGP 2600 that will be released shortly....sure it's not fast DX10, but it's still DX10 and it's AGP.

do some research before posting next time.

Just remember that buying an AGP X1950 Pro and another GB of DDR1 memory also gives you more components that won't find there way into your complete overhaul. You'd be buying parts with the knowledge that you would be selling them off in 12 months. If thats enough time for you and you'd rather save a little bit of money, then go for it.

A high-performance AGP card is something that I'd keep around. My 7800GS is not going anywhere no matter what I replace my 7800GT SLI with.

The memory and a 1950Pro sounds like the way to go vice building a new machine right now. My XP system is running really good too. I may just wait to build a new system once I succumb to buying Vista, lol. Y'all have given me a few things to think about... I need more $.

I heard that last year, I'll believe it when I see it. If we ever do see one, I'll bet it's even more expensive than it's PCI-E counterpart.

Any reason why it's taking so long to release????

Yeesh, why do people get so butt hurt when it comes time to replace a obsolete, dying technology? AGP is old, its past its life expectancy. It had a great run and secured its place in the history books, but now its been replaced with a technologically superior technology. Vendors need to stop making AGP cards entirely. Hopefully, the next round of NV/ATI GPUs won't have AGP support in any form.

Gecube currently have the 2400Pro AGP listed on their website so i guess you are wrong again

Gecube HD2400PRO AGP

Sapphire list both the 2600 and 2400 on their website.

Sapphire HD2400 and HD2600 series

Like I said before do some research before posting misinformation.

Although to be fair, I would never purchase any of these cards simply because they are lower performing than the AGP X1950Pro and OC'd 7800GS OC that I currently have in my AGP rigs...and DX10 won't be worth running on any of these cards.
