Hi all
i am a intelligent noob , which means that i dont know much (anything) about networking but can learn fast with a little instruction
we dont have wireless internet at office, and the country that i am in mobile internet is qt expensive....so not an option,
i want to get internet access on my ipad and iphone
so i researched and found that a prog called connectify-me can create a local hotspot that shares your wired lan internet securely using a usb wifi adapter
so i got the usb wifi adapter , plugged it into my desktop , got the free liteversion of connectify-me and lo & behold i had my own adhoc wifi hotspot,

but our office internet settings is not allowing internet access on the ipad and iphone

does anybody know what kind of security they might be using proxies or whatever other types there are....and what is the way to work around it

It depends on what technically office Internet means. What type of connection and how it is configured.

Hard to guess through the Internet what you have there.

In general connectify-me act as a software Router as a result the devices connected to it are on a separate subnet, could be that their IP is blocked by the main network (firewall or similar setting).

This software is free and might do better but it need Win 7 - http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/

adding a wifi hotspot to a corporate network is generally looked down upon, as it could lead to unauthorized devices on the network.

It's quite possible that your iphone/ipad/whatever is being blocked out by the corporate network gear, even with the hotspot.

If you need wifi access, talk to your IT dept. This forum does not condone working around IT policy.

I second what VirtualLarry said. If the office IT is blocking access to your unauthorized wireless connection, that means they are doing their job.

If you need wireless access, ask them to set it up properly.
