so my previously working fully functional comp was turned off for a week during hurricane Gustav. when i turned it back on, i noticed that the DVD drive wasn't showing up under My Computer. rebooting, i looked in the bios and the DVD drive is there. it opens and closes so the power is working. . . .

anyone have any idea why this has happened and how i can fix it? thanks alot :)

I can't tell you why, but I've seen this before and the drive had to be replaced.

I did my troubleshooting by replacing the drive. I used the same connector, power lead and jumpered it the same. The replacement drive was recognized.

You might want to try a different cable first.

does the drive show up in device manager? Is it recognized in safe mode? did some quick searches, looks like most are suggesting deleting upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry. Here is an artcile on how to do that.

Yeah check device manager. I've seen a case where the dvd driver couldn't start due to a weird conflict.

Some times a driver that gets corrupted can cause this kind of problem. If it shows in the device manager even if it indicates that the device is ok uninstall the driver, then restart the computer and let windows rediscover it and reinstall the drivers.

thank you all for your suggestions. it showed up in device manager but the driver was disabled and giving an error. . . .first i uninstalled the driver and rebooted- that didn't work. . . .then i uninstalled the dvd-drive and rebooted- it found new hardware but gave me the same driver problem. . . .

then i deleted the filters in the registry above and voila! the drive is now in my computer for use. . . .thanks alot for the help- saved me a trip to the computer store :)
