Noob BF2 questions

Never played a BF game before this one. Some noob questions I have (and I'm tired of getting jackass responses in game :)).

1. What is a ticket?
2. Do the flags/spawn locations mean anything? It seems like owning them doesn't change whether you win or lose...
3. Why does the sniper rifle suck?
4. Are there hit boxes or is it random? I seem to have better luck killing people by aiming at their legs...
5. Why doesn't the parachute work? Is it class-specific? I have gotten it to work on assault and anti-tank troops but non of the others...
6. Why can't I duck when I'm the gunner in the tank? (it says I can duck but I can't...)
7. Am I on bad servers or does no one ever use a mic/squads?
8. Is there a way to free the camera when you're driving a vehicle? (a la UT2K4 Onslaught)

That's all I can think of atm, thank you in advance.

1. A ticket is basically a person's life (sorry, cant find a better analogy)..a team loses a ticket when someone spawns.. tickets decrease faster if your team owns more than half of the flags

2. basically spawn locations are important because of things that spawn there (ie. tanks, AA).. also, like i said, owning more than half the flags decrease the opponent's tickets faster

3. the sniper rifle doesnt suck, its just harder to get a kill with it... to get a one shot kill, it MUST be a headshot.. otherwise it take 2-4 shots to kill someone.. i think this is better because imagine it being an automatic one hit kill.. EVERYONE would be a sniper since it would be so easy to get a kill

5. to deply a parachute, it 9 (you might have to repeately hit it)

6. default button is control

7. my clan uses third party communicatiions (such as ventrilo)

8. defaul button is C

1. What is a ticket?

A ticket represents one life on your team. You use them when you respawn or are "killed". If a medic revives you after being "critically wounded", you don't lose the ticket. Why they call it a "ticket" I don't know.

2. Do the flags/spawn locations mean anything? It seems like owning them doesn't change whether you win or lose...

Control points allow you to gain access to more vehicles. More spawn locations = faster ticket loss for your enemy = less lives for them = faster win. However, if you have all but one of the spawn locations and they slaughter you like lambs, you're going to lose anyway. If you control all the spawn points and kill the last soldier, you win automatically no matter what the scores are.

3. Why does the sniper rifle suck?

Balance issues. The M24 takes two shots to kill unless you get them in the head

4. Are there hit boxes or is it random? I seem to have better luck killing people by aiming at their legs...

I normally aim for the chest.

5. Why doesn't the parachute work? Is it class-specific? I have gotten it to work on assault and anti-tank troops but non of the others...

Lag can sometimes get the best of you. 9 is the default key. A parachute won't work unless you pull the rip cord at least three stories up (most tall buildings).

6. Why can't I duck when I'm the gunner in the tank? (it says I can duck but I can't...)

Default key is crouch (left ctrl). You can duck in tanks, humvees, stationary weapons, etc. You cannot duck in an Anti-Aircraft vehicle (linebacker, tunguska, etc)(for some odd reason :confused: ) , boats, or aircraft.

7. Am I on bad servers or does no one ever use a mic/squads?

Teamwork is lacking on most public servers. You'll have better luck on the clan ones.

8. Is there a way to free the camera when you're driving a vehicle? (a la UT2K4 Onslaught)

F9 = Cockpit\driver seat
F10 = Chase
F11 = Front
F12 = Fly by cam

You can cycle them with C

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. :)

Ok, about aiming, do you have to adjust for lag? (like CoD) or not? (like CS)

Do grenades actually damage vehicles? tanks? what about small arms? I never know if shooting at that helicopter that's smoking is gonna do anything...

And about the paracute, I have seen people jump off the second story of the building using their chute, are you sure it takes 3 stories?

In CS you don't have to adjust for lag. If on your screen, you shoot someone in the head, they get hit in the head, whether you have a 3 ping or a 300 ping. If you have a 300 ping, it will take a second before he actually gets hit in the head though.

In quake3 based games (CoD, etc), when you press fire, if you have a 300 ping, it will take a few seconds before your shot fires so when you are aiming, you have to aim in front of your target (if he is running accross your feild of view, you have to aim a few steps in front of him). In CS you don't have to do this.

Also, I've been playing fps games since they were invented, I've got plenty of practice with sniper rifles :). When I'm sniping in BF2, I feel like I need to compensate for wind or something because I can pump 10 rounds into someone 200 yards away and not land one. Thats what leads me to the lag question. It seems the only time I land shots with the sniper rifle is when the target is stationary.

Of course, part of me is glad sniping sucks in this game. No one hates snipers more then I do. It seems a system of class balancing (like Wolfenstein had) where each team gets x amount of assault, 1 sniper 2 medics, etc etc all adjustable by the server admins would be great to have in BF2.

Pratice makes perfect. :D

You have to lead in most fps so try that next time.

Hey whats this memory leak they're talking about with the 1.01 patch? I read over at FM that EA officially backed down to 1.00 because of a problem with the patch. Whats a memory leak do? the game seems to run fine on my system with the patch....

It's a problem with the server, not the client.

What it basically does is it endlessly keeps eating up 16kb of memory every second.

and that's without ANYBODY in it.

Program takes up around 60+MB (reports of over 140MB/hour as well) of memory (RAM + swap) every hour in an empty server. It's never released until the machine is rebooted (i.e. start -- shutdown -- restart). Now multiply that by however many BF2 server instances are being run from the same machine and you have problems.

Now you have all that PLUS the base server application itself (not light at all) PLUS the added resources it takes per player.

Well that's EA for you...always releasing something that isn't ready.

As for the sniping, I too am glad it isn't too easy. It's hard enough to see a sniper with so much else going on around you that you have to pay attention to. Snipers have the advantage of hardly being noticed, so I guess they had to balance it by making it very hard to shoot with the gun.

I still like playing COD:UO more than BF2 though. It just feels right.

I agree, BF2 is fun but it feels kinda clunky. Now when's CoD 2 coming out? :)
