noob: best card for photoshop and watching DVD

I hate to ask such a noob question, but I really know nothing about video cards and with all the choices I'm having a trouble figuring out what is appropriate for me:

I just bought the Dell 2405FPW and have an old nVidia Geforce2 GTS card. I need to get a new one with DVI output. I use my computer mainly for Photoshop work. Occasionally I do a little video editing. I also like to watch DVDs. I do not play games. What are your thoughts on an appropriate card for my uses. It has to be AGP 8x/4x.
What would be the best card for the money. I'd like to spend less than $200.

Thanks guys,
- Mike

Forget matrox, they tend to be very expensive. Besides you don't need great power for 2D graphics, R9200 of FX5200 will do as good as any matrox card in 2D image editing. Also matrox card can't compete against nVidia or ATI cards in DVD video palyback.

from my personal experience, i was totally flabbergasted by the way Matrox handled my case. again, i'd like to emphasize i'm simply informing you of my experience with this company and, of course, cannot speak for others' experiences. they decided to no longer renew their contract with the provider of their color adjustment software and, as a consequence, there was NO way for me to adjust colors via the Matrox menus! tech support was not helpful, nor was the sales department. they simply said that color adjustment is not longer available and that i should go out and purchase my own color adjustment software! as you all know, color adjustment on LCD's are not available on the LCD itself, and it requires the software of the video card to do so.

eventually, i even spoke to the senior people of the company. to my surprise, he didn't really know, but his first response was whether the sales literature/webpage specifically stated that color adjustment was available, and that should the material not say so, he simply said that he company did not break any laws!! my jaw dropped. who's talking about breaking laws? i was simply sadly surprised that the Matrox card was one of the ONLY cards i've ever heard of that doesn't provide color adjustment! you try ANY Nvidia, any ATI, basically any card that we talk about here on this forum, and see if you can adjust colors, and the answer is, of course!!

needless to say, i was not about to do any business with a sompany who's senior management's attitude was such. as they say, all these attitudes and way of doing business trickles down. of course, what do they care that they offended one person! but i was beyond insulted by all their staff and especially, the senior person who said that they didn't break any laws! no wonder their company essentially disappeared from the video card scene more and more, but kudos to them, they found their lil niche in unsophisticated, corporate/airport multiscreen market with low tech requirements. good for them. i'm personally staying away. again, this is one person's experience. i'm not speaking for anyone else. good luck!

Wrong, I noticed a huge differance, and there was a post not to long ago about some guy switching to a Matrox card and noticing a differance in PS, what makes those cards so much better in DVD playback?

EDIT: Here it is.

I'm just telling you whats best for 2D and PS.

... and I'd prefer an ATi, if only for the notably better track record in DVI signal integrity at high resolutions. Furthermore, I'd go with a 9550 over a 92x0 for the more sophisticated DVD/video processing engine. If you dare your luck a bit (driver quality wise), you might also want to look at S3 DeltaChrome, if only for its focus on media, HDTV, DVD etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys... I'm gonna read up on all that was suggested here and make my decision from there.

Thanks again,
- Mike
