Something to remember, these mRNA vaccines were designed from a readout of the viral RNA. Moderna has never had the actual virus in it's possession. Based on this, I think they know whether or not the vaccine "should" work. They are never going to promise without testing, of course.Per someone I know who works at Moderna in a non research sense. They are confident their vaccine will still work and can modify it rapidly if required.
Also viruses mutate all the time and typically they mutate to be less leathal because it make no evolutionary sense to kill your host.
Again I’m no expert but the second part makes sense.
